Studios and Workshops of the National Theatre

Literature Night 2023 / Prague / Studios and Workshops of the National Theatre

Vinohradská 117, Praha 3

Around 1914, the former police barracks was converted into a decoration storehouse for the Royal Provincial German Theatre. In 1935, the National Theatre acquired the building to store its decorations. After the bombing of the workshops in Apolinářská Street, the theatre moved its painting and decoration workshops to this location. The use of the workshops is closely connected with the personality of the stage designer Josef Svoboda. The building was adapted to suit his vision so that the theatre’s decorations could be supplied from one place, where all the theatre’s professionals were based. It was to be the place where the stage designers´ draft designs were handed over, models of the sets made, costume prototypes created, and the first rehearsals of the scenes held before the premiere.
