The Vinohrady Sports Hall is an example of one of Prague’s purest functionalist buildings from the turn of the 1930s and 1940s. Recessed ceiling lights and a statue of Miroslav Tyrš by Ladislav Šaloun decorate its entrance hall. The building was started in 1938; three years later, the hall was occupied by the Germans, and after the war, the sports complex was assigned to communist physical education activities. In 1991 it was returned to the Sokol community. The building houses one large and several smaller halls, as well as a swimming pool. In addition to the Sokol all-round sporting facilities, the complex is home to a number of other sports clubs.
