Venuše in Švehla Dormitory (Švehlovka)

Literature Night 2023 / Prague / Venuše in Švehla Dormitory (Švehlovka)

Slavíkova 22, Praha 3

The magnificent Švehla Dormitory building, constructed in 1923-1925 in Art Deco style with elements of Rondo-Cubism, used to be an important centre of cultural and social life. The building was named after Antonín Švehla, the prime minister at the time. Following the demonstrations in the autumn of 1939 and the funeral of Jan Opletal, members of the Nazi security police stormed the building and arrested the demonstrators. The former Academia cinema is now used by the Venuše Cultural Centre in Švehla Dormitory, whose artistic programme includes alternative theatre, workshops, film screenings, dance performances, and community events.
