Laichter House

Literature Night 2023 / Prague / Laichter House

Chopinova 1543/4,  Praha 2

The house was built in 1908-1910 according to the design of the renowned architect Jan Kotěra as the seat of the prestigious publishing house of Jan Laichter. Its interior is dominated by a spacious writing room connected to a decorated hall with a staircase, which used to join the publishing house with the publisher’s apartment. In 1937, a fourth floor, designed by Pavel Janák, was added to the building. In 1949, the publishing house was closed due to the communist ban on private publishing houses. After 1989, the building was returned to the family, and today it is used for cultural events, lectures, and exhibitions. Between 2000 and 2021, it was the seat of the Paseka publishing house.
