Flora Palace / General Health Insurance Company

Literature Night 2023 / Prague / Flora Palace / General Health Insurance Company

Orlická 2, Praha 3

This monumental structure is a significant example of interwar architecture. Its architect Alois Krofta used rounded corners, Art Deco motifs, and classical elements as distinctive features. The building was closed in 1990 and fell into disrepair during the restitution disputes. Later, it was bought by the General Health Insurance Company, whose needs it still serves today. A part of the multi-purpose building housed the Flora cinema, which used to be the largest cinema not only in Prague but also in the whole country when it opened in 1928. The main entrance of the building is decorated with larger-than-life marble statues of a man and a woman holding unrolling film reels.
