Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord

Literature Night 2023 / Prague / Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord

Jiřího z Poděbrad Square, Praha 3

The construction of the Roman Catholic church was based on an urban plan that reflected the population growth of the Vinohrady district in the 1920s. The Slovenian architect Josip Plečnik was invited to realise the project after becoming Prague Castle’s chief architect. The unusual shape of the building, constructed between 1928 and 1932, was inspired by Noah’s Ark and by royal symbols. Its round tower clock is the largest in the Czech Republic. There is a tall gilded figure of Jesus Christ above the altar and six statues of the Czech lands´ patron saints on the sides. In 2014, the church was nominated to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
