Flemish writer Lara Taveirne (* 1983) is one of the most distinctive voices of her generation. In addition to writing, she is also a teacher and theater director. Her debut De kinderen van Calais (The Children of Calais), about two girls who jumped off a cliff in France, was nominated for the prestigious De Bronzen Uil Award in 2014 and was reissued in 2025 with significant revisions under the title Meisjes van krijt (The Chalk Girls). Taveirne writes poetically and compellingly, with a flair for lively dialogue. In her works, she explores the consequences of love – the destructive power of desire, the unreliability of memories, broken hearts, and motherhood.
