It’s Advent, and Asle, an aging painter, is preparing for his annual Christmas exhibition. His routine life as a widower filled with work, memories of his beloved wife, and conversations with his neighbor is disrupted by an unexpected event: his friend and alter ego, who shares his name, needs help. And so Asle commutes between his secluded home and the city, while also traveling through time. His journeys and each stop along the way serve as doors through which he returns to key moments in his life. Through an inner monologue, structured into long, rhythmic sections and crystalline dialogues, we are immersed in two parallel life stories, in reflections on art, faith, love, and friendship.

Jon Fosse (* 1959) is a Norwegian novelist, poet, and playwright. His work has been translated into more than fifty languages, and his plays are regularly staged around the world. In 2021, the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno awarded him an honorary doctorate for his contribution to modern drama. He is the recipient of the prestigious Ibsen Prize and the Nordic Council Literature Prize. In 2023, he was awarded the highest literary honor, the Nobel Prize in Literature, for his “innovative plays and prose that express the inexpressible.” His books published in Czech include Morning and Evening (2007), Melancholy (2007–2009), Wakefulness (2009), Olav’s Dreams (2015), Trilogy (2016), and A Shining (2024).
