When Ida leaves home, she has nothing but her mother’s old, battered suitcase, a few favorite pieces of clothing, and her laptop. She is saying goodbye, probably forever, to the small town where she has spent her entire life so far. But saying goodbye really isn’t Ida’s strong suit – two months ago, she didn’t even make it to her mother’s funeral. At the train station, she picks a train heading as far away as possible and ends up on Rügen. There, filled with anger, grief, and guilt, she wanders aimlessly until she runs into the innkeeper Knut and his wife Marianne. The elderly couple takes the girl under their wing and gives her the space she so desperately needs. And then Ida meets Leif, who, though he has his own demons, seems able to tame hers. Will she manage to find the will to live, mend her relationship with her beloved older sister Tilda, and stand on her own two feet?
