Following a unique urban concept by Prague architect Antonín Engel (1879–1958), a series of neoclassical buildings was built around the outer ring of Vítězné náměstí in the 1920s: Palác Bajkal, General Staff building, residential buildings with arcades, and the CTU complex. After WWII, Palác Bajkal, renamed Kyjev, mainly served the Ministry of National Defense as the Central Army House (ÚDA). After 1989, it was renamed DAP – Army House Prague – and following a major renovation in 2008, it now serves both the Army of the Czech Republic and the general public with hotel services.
