Gilles Petel (France): La Deposition

Translation:

La Déposition is about a love affair between a young man of 19 and a mature man of 40, a psychiatrist. This story of long-lasting passion is told by the young man ten years on. Brilliantly written and fast paced, the novel won acclaim from the best French critics.

Tibor Fischer (Hungary): Good to be God

Translation:

In this darkly cynical and surreal novel Tyndale Corbett, a middle-aged, unemployed lighting salesman from London swaps the life of a loser for the life of God. He borrows a friend’s passport and flies to Miami where he uses his marketing skills to sell salvation, first as an assistant pastor at the Church of the Heavily Armed Christ, then as God himself.

Simonetta Agnello Hornby (Italy): The Almond Picker

Translation: Alaistar McEwen, Penguin Book, 2005

A riveting tale of corruption and intrigue with a cast of wonderfully-drawn Sicilian characters, The Almond Picker, a bestseller in Italy and the winner of four European book prizes, is, above all, a poignant love story with an utterly unforgettable heroine at its heart.
